Event Experience

The Cemetery Walk offers a distinctive educational experience where costumed interpreters portray the “ghosts” of Plymouth’s past residents, sharing their life stories in the first person. This year’s walk features an entirely new lineup of historical figures, as the museum never repeats characters from previous events. Each portrayal is carefully researched to provide accurate historical information about Plymouth’s development and the people who shaped it. The museum staff emphasizes that this is an educational rather than frightening experience, with great care taken to respect the cemetery and those interred there.

As twilight falls over Riverside Cemetery, visitors will be guided along a predetermined route to meet various historical figures stationed throughout the grounds. Each character will share their personal story, offering insights into different eras of Plymouth’s development – from early pioneers to prominent business leaders, from ordinary citizens to those who made extraordinary contributions to the community. The experience creates a powerful connection between present and past, helping visitors understand how previous generations shaped the Plymouth we know today.

Practical Information

Participants should plan for approximately one hour to complete the Cemetery Walk, which traverses uneven terrain throughout Riverside Cemetery. Comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended, as are weather-appropriate clothing and accessories. Since the event proceeds rain or shine, visitors should bring umbrellas if rain is in the forecast. For those attending during the later time slots (closer to 8:00 pm), flashlights are essential as lighting within the cemetery is limited after sunset. The museum staff takes precautions to ensure safety, including marking paths with cones that should not be crossed.

Parking is available within the cemetery on roadways not closed to traffic, as well as in the Massey Field Parking Lot adjacent to the grounds. Visitors are asked to respect the orange cones that mark restricted areas, as these are in place to protect guests, actors, and cemetery property. For any additional questions about the event, contact the Plymouth Historical Museum at 734-455-8940 extension 0 or email the secretary through the museum’s website. The 2025 Cemetery Walk is generously sponsored by Schrader-Howell Funeral Home, continuing their tradition of supporting this community-focused historical program.
