Groovy Tunes and Grown-Up Grub: Red Ryder Lounge Shakes Up Plymouth’s Bar Scene

Groovy Tunes and Grown-Up Grub: Red Ryder Lounge Shakes Up Plymouth’s Bar Scene

by | Sep 25, 2024

Red Ryder Lounge is not just another bar; it’s a nostalgic retreat located at 584 Starkweather Street in Plymouth, Michigan, right in the heart of the charming Old Village neighborhood. It officially opened its doors on September 17, 2024, and this lounge is already making waves with its unique concept and inviting atmosphere.

A Nostalgic Vibe

As you walk into the Red Ryder Lounge, you might feel like you’ve stepped into a time capsule from the 70s or 80s. The decor is warm and inviting, featuring wood paneling, vintage-style barstools, and tables that evoke memories of hanging out in a friend’s basement. The owners, Jeff O’Brien and his wife Alexis, along with her mother, Sandy Mily, have crafted an environment that encourages conversation and connection. Jeff describes it perfectly: “Once the music started jamming and the drinks started flowing, you could tell people were feeling the ambiance of this place. It was kind of like a party in your parents’ basement before the technology revolution”.

Music That Moves You

One of the standout features of the Red Ryder Lounge is its impressive collection of vinyl records. With thousands of albums cataloged by genre—ranging from country legends like Johnny Cash to Motown classics—there’s something for everyone. The music is played on a turntable located near the northwest corner of the bar, creating a spontaneous soundtrack that changes throughout the night. This focus on music adds to the lounge’s charm, making it a perfect spot for those who appreciate good tunes without the distraction of televisions or screens.

Delicious Eats and Drinks

No bar experience is complete without great food and drinks. The Red Ryder Lounge offers a made-from-scratch menu that features classic bar fare with a twist. Whether you’re craving a juicy burger or some crispy wings, you’ll find something to satisfy your appetite. Pair your meal with one of their craft cocktails, or choose from a selection of beers and wines that complement the laid-back vibe.

A Community Hub

The owners envision Red Ryder as a place where everyone feels welcome—a local hangout akin to the bar in “Cheers.” Jeff O’Brien emphasizes this sense of community: “We want it to be like the bar in the TV show ‘Cheers’ — a neighborhood hangout where everybody knows your name.” With no distractions from screens, patrons are encouraged to engage with one another, fostering genuine connections.

Honoring Local History

The name “Red Ryder” pays tribute to Plymouth’s past, specifically referencing the Daisy Air Rifle factory that once operated nearby. This connection to local history adds depth to the lounge’s identity and makes it feel rooted in its community. The design was crafted with help from Patrick Thompson Design, who is known for creating spaces that resonate with their surroundings.

Location and Hours

Conveniently situated in Old Village, Red Ryder Lounge occupies a stand-alone building that’s over 130 years old. This historic charm adds character to an already unique establishment. The lounge opens at 4 PM every day except Sundays and Mondays, making it an ideal spot for after-work drinks or casual evenings out.

Hours:

  • Tuesday – Thursday: 4 PM – 11 PM
  • Friday – Saturday: 4 PM – 12 AM
  • Sunday & Monday: Closed

A Magical Experience Awaits

Since its soft opening, feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Patrons have commented on how refreshing it is to see people genuinely enjoying each other’s company without being glued to their phones. Jeff noted that during those initial nights, “very few people had their phones out,” which speaks volumes about the atmosphere they’ve created. The Red Ryder Lounge is more than just a bar; it’s a celebration of community, music, and good times. Whether you’re looking for a place to unwind after work or somewhere to catch up with friends over great food and drinks, this lounge promises an experience that’s both fun and memorable.

So, if you find yourself in Plymouth, make sure to swing by Red Ryder Lounge at 584 Starkweather Street. Grab a seat at the bar, order one of their signature cocktails, and let the music take you back to simpler times. You might just find yourself making new friends while reminiscing about old ones—just like in your parent’s basement all those years ago!
